How It Works

Engine displacement = pi x (bore/2)^2 x stroke x cylinders. It measures the total volume swept by all pistons. Larger displacement generally means more torque and power. Oversquare engines (bore > stroke) rev higher and favor horsepower; undersquare engines (stroke > bore) produce more torque at lower RPM. Common conversions: 1 liter = 1,000 cc = 61 cubic inches. A "5.0L V8" is approximately 302 cubic inches.
